I have a late 8N that had been converted to 12V. It has a 12V coil on it, new. I have been working on it since spring. I won’t start right away,but if I jumper it to the truck,it starts and stays running. This morning while trying to figure out the problem I checked the voltage at the coil and it is 6. So I went back to the Ballast resistor.

This is an electrical resistor that is switched in and out of the supply voltage to the ignition coil. The ballast resistor lowers voltage after the engine is started to reduce wear on ignition components. It also makes the engine much easier to start by effectively doubling the voltage provided to the ignition coil when the engine is being cranked. Not all car manufacturers used a ballast resistor in their ignition systems So you should check to see if yours does.
That is far from the truth, the only thing that brings the voltage back up during cranking is a by pass of the resistor or some CD ignition boxes. An ignition system doesn’t necessarily depend upon the resistor for starting, it just makes it operate better. The ignition system doesn’t want the resistor for starting at all, hence the reason for a by pass.
If the car doesn’t start with the ballast installed and its smoking, then it’s probably either the wrong part or defective. Not necessarily, new ballast resistors can be known to smoke at first.

If I hook a jumper between battery positive and the coil, it’ll start and run just fine. When I hook up the wire from ignition, I’m only reading 9 volts. But with the switch off, resistance between the coil and the switch is. So the wiring is good, but I’ll have to do voltage drops to figure out the source of the draw. The guys at pertronix said that there might be a ballast resistor built into the ignition switch to keep the coil from overheating when the engine is off and the key is on, but I can’t really tell.
Thanks for the advice, I’ll get this thing back on the road one of these days. The ignition switch could be defective.

Signs are a crank without a start or a start and an immediate stall. The duty of the ballast resistor is to limit voltage to the ignition coil. This added longevity to the coil as well as protected the ignition system from over-voltage.
Symptoms of a bad ballast resistor may be a crank but no start or start followed by an immediate stall. You will most likely not get any warning of its failure; it may be working fine today and give out tomorrow. The ignition points are not designed to take full battery voltage for long.

It seems to me I should be using the internal resistor coil because I’d prefer to have the igniter powered off of the full 12V I can supply for the coil just seems cleaner First, do I have this right and second, is there a difference in performance between the internal and the external ballast?

Where does my coil resistor wire go? Replaced the points with ignitor electronic module and flamethrower coil. It does not have a ballast resistor but a resistor wire. I can not find where this goes to connect to the other non coil end. I just need to know where to connect the red wire. Also how do I tell if I have a shift interupter? Mopar discontinued the Slant 6 EI kit for the points to electronic ignition conversion, but they still offer the V-8 version of the Kit. The V-8 version would be a solution, but the distributor is not the correct size for a Slant 6. Any model Slant Six car and possibly many other years would have this distributor.

Feeding the coil with 14 volts instead of 7 automatically improves spark intensity, improving throttle response, fuel mileage, and maybe even adding a bit more power, too. The average person thinks anything from the factory is automatically the best it can be, but real car people know new technology usually means improvement. Honest Ford guys will admit that the Duraspark system has not lived up to its name, and replacement boxes are even less reliable.
While original factory Mopar ignition boxes are good, the design for both the Ford and Mopar boxes suffers from an often overlooked, yet crucial design consideration.

Search This Message Board: Bob G i would disconnect the wire to top of coil and see what happens. You may have a wire shorting to ground somwwhere. A lot of people use a 12 volt coil and elimate the extra resistor. Still need the ballast ressitor tho. Good Luck thanks bob,i’ll try that, but where is the extra resistor.
Not sure about it smoking tho. Larry Not sure why yours smoked but when mine did it burnt up. That is when I pretty much redid most of the wires and cleaned up all the contact for the wires.
A single ballast resistor being identifiable having only two prongs. You want to wire the ballast resistor in series with the ignition feed to the coil. Be certain to mount this resistor away from wiring harness’ and other meltable components.
Apr 14, · Ok, I’m checking my electronic ignition system on my 72 Duster, When checking voltage at the battery I got volts. When I turn the ignition switch on I get volts at input wire (disconnected from resistor) to the ballast resistor.
Some people will tap off the middle post to get a 12V supply, though this is generally a bad idea – explained below: You can even tap off the “top” battery as well for another 12V circuit, but please note that the ground – for this circuit will not be the same as your bus ground: Because the grounds are different for this second circuit, this means that you can’t power anything with it that is grounded through it’s installation to your bus.
The 12V circuit that this creates will always be on, you can make it be switched such as by the ignition switch by simply wiring it through a 24V relay. This is generally a bad idea because it means your draw on your batteries is out of balance unless you match the two 12V circuits One battery will continuously lose more charge than the other and then be at a lower voltage. The charger on your bus does not charge the two batteries separately, it simply places 28V or so across the battery terminals.
